Abang Lingkod Party-list Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano reprimanded a barangay captain for his absence in a previous hearing of a House of Representatives panel, after the latter was instead seen attending a championship game of a basketball tournament.
Ramolito Bautista, the barangay captain of San Jose Malino in Mexico, Pampanga was earlier invited by the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs to served as a resource person in the inquiry into the P3-billion illegal drug bust last year.
The big-time drug haul took place was under his jurisdiction.
“I’ll just like to remind you that you shouldn’t lie. Ano ka na sa akin, strike two ka na. Alam mo bakit? (You're on strike two for me. You know why?) Because when you were invited and you were asked to be excused during that previous hearing, nagpadala ka dito ng (you sent an) excuse letter because of your medical condition,” an incensed Paduano told Bautista.
“Pero nandoon ka nanood ng (But you were there watching) basketball, championship [game]. Do you confirm that you are indeed present there? Sabihin ko sa iyo ha (Let me tell you), don’t lie because strike two ka na (you’re on strike two),” he stressed.
In response, Bautista sheepishly explained that he recently had a medical operation that required him to have a check-up.
“Bale po, the other day po no’n mayroon po akong check up, kaya medyo, ano po diehard po kasi ako ng basketball at pinilit ko pong manood,” he said.
(Basically, the other day I had a check-up, but because I'm a basketball diehard I insisted on watching.)
“Bakit pinilit mong dumalo do’n, manood sa basketball kaysa pumunta sa hearing? And your reason to be excused is that may problema ka, medical. So you’re lying,” Paduano asserted.
(Why did you insist on going there, watching basketball instead of attending the hearing? And your reason to be excused is that you have a medical problem. So you're lying.)
“Do you confirm that you watched the championship game between Pampanga ata tsaka (I believe and) San Juan?” he asked.
“Opo (yes), your honor,” replied Bautista, who was left with no choice but to apologize to the committee.
The village chief was specifically summoned by the panel as he had personally met with a certain Willie Ong, an alleged Chinese drug lord whose Empire 999 Realty Corporation was the owner of the warehouse where the P3 billion worth of illegal drugs was seized last year.
Bautista said he had met Ong on several occasions as the businessman applied for various permits in relation to his warehouses.
According to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the whereabouts of Ong is still being unknown.
