Palace declares July 2 a special nonworking day in Pasig City

Malacañang has declared July 2, 2024, a special non-working holiday in Pasig City for the commemoration of the 451st Araw ng Pasig on Tuesday.

The Palace released a copy of Proclamation No. 612 on Monday, a day before the holiday takes place.

The proclamation was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on June 29.

Based on the proclamation, the Palace declared the holiday to allow Pasigueños to celebrate the founding anniversary of their city.

"It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Pasig be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration," the proclamation read.

While its cityhood was established on Jan. 21, 1995, Pasig was originally established on July 2, 1573, making it one of the oldest towns in the Philippines.

The name "Pasig" is said to be derived from an old Sanskrit word which meant "a river flowing from one body of water to another," according to former Director of the Institute of National Language, Dr. Jose Villa Panganiban.

Pasig was originally part of the Rizal Province until it was carved out of the province in 1975 when Metro Manila was formed. It was converted into a highly urbanized city following a plebiscite in 1995.
