Magnitude 5 quake hits Eastern Samar — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Eastern Samar on Monday afternoon, July 1.

According to Phivolcs data, the earthquake occurred at 1:53 p.m., with its epicenter located 31 kilometers southeast of Balangiga, Eastern Samar.

The quake was recorded at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Hinundayan and Hinunangan in Southern Leyte and Dulag and Abuyog in Leyte.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin, resulting from the movement of an active fault near the area.

While Phivolcs anticipated no significant damage, aftershocks were possible.
