CEBU CITY – Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma opposed the bill that seeks to legalize divorce in the country.

Palma appealed to the faithful to shun House Bill (HB) No. 9349 or the An Act Reinstituting Absolute Divorce as an Alternative Mode for the Dissolution of Marriage.
Palma said divorce is not the solution to broken and irreparable marriages.
“I appeal to all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebu to join hands in our effort to make it known that we do not accept divorce due to the damage it will inflict, not only on us Catholics, but on our values as a nation,” Palma said in a letter.
Copies of Palma's letter titled “No to Divorce” were printed on huge tarpaulins and were mounted on the front gates of Catholic churches in Cebu.
Palma echoed the opposition of some groups in Cebu such as the Human Life International and the Archdiocese of Cebu (AOC) Commission on the Laity which insisted that divorce is not the solution to save troubled marriages.
“Divorce is not the solution. Do not be deceived by the notion that it will only affect those who seek it,” Palma wrote.
Palma added that divorce may even cause more harm, particularly on children.
“Be aware that divorce will redefine marriage by eliminating permanent character. It is not true that divorce will not harm anyone; studies show that children suffer most in a divorce,” added Palma.
The prelate urged priests to be “more zealous in preparing couples for the lifelong union of marriage rather than just officiating the wedding ceremony.”
“It is the enduring union that needs careful preparation, not merely the ceremony that lasts an hour. Together, let us uphold the sanctity and permanence of marriage,” Palma said.
Fe Mantuhac-Barino, chairman of the AOC Commission on the Laity, has warned that mass actions will be taken to oppose the bill.
“The Commission will tell the people to remember those who voted for the divorce bill,” Barino said in a press event a few weeks ago.
One of the legislators from Cebu who supported the pro-divorce bills is third district Rep. Pablo John Garcia. “Sometimes, divorce is a moral necessity,” Garcia said in the Open Line News Forum.
The Cebuano lawmaker said divorce would not harm children. He said that dysfunctional marriages will have a negative effect on children of affected couples.
