Angara on becoming next DepEd secretary: 'Open naman tayo'

BALER, AURORA - Sen. Sonny Angara said on Monday, July 1, that he's open to taking on the role as the next secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) should the post be offered to him.

"Open naman ho tayo kung sakaling pinagkatiwalaan (We're open to it if we will be entrusted with it)," he told reporters in an interview.

He added that it's something that's impossible to refuse if offered to him.

The position was vacated after Vice President Sara Duterte resigned as a member of the Marcos Cabinet, Education Secretary, and vice-chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

So far, Angara said that the has yet to receive any formal offer to be DepEd secretary.

President Marcos has admitted having difficulty finding a new DepEd secretary, saying the new agency head should be a good educator and administrator.

He also announced on June 27 that he would appoint a new secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) by the end of the week, saying the position vacated by the Vice President could not be left empty for so long.

While Angara said that it's still "premature and improper" to discuss about possible education reforms he laid out some that should be focused on by the next DepEd official.

"Definitely the next Education secretary kailangan yung mga reporma sa edukasyon tulad nung mga kalidad ng edukasyon, yun importante, tapos yung mga tinatawag na resource gaps o yung pagkukulang sa mga classrooms mga silid-aralan sa textbooks. Maraming kailangan bigyan ng lunas talaga (should focus on education reforms such as the quality of education, that's important, then the so-called resource gaps or the lack of classrooms, textbooks. There's a lot that should be addressed)," he said.

He also thanked his colleagues such as Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero, former Senate President Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Sen. JV Ejercito and former Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva for their vote of confidence in him.

"Well lubos tayong nagpapasalamat sa ating mga kasamahan... Nagpapasalamat ho tayo sa kanilang vote of confidence dahil nakatrabaho ko sila so alam nila na pag trabaho, seryoso naman ho tayo (Well I realy thank my colleagues...We thank them for their vote of confidence because we've worked with them and they know when it comes to doing the job, we're serious about it)," Angara said.

Asked if he's willing to let go of his remaining years as senator if he gets offered the position, he replied: "We'll cross that bridge when we get there siguro and let's see, if the President needs us then you know I could help him also. We're helping him in the senate so if we can help him in other ways why not."
