‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ achieves biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year


The first episode of “Star Wars: The Acolyte” achieved a record for the biggest premiere on Disney+ this year. 

“The Acolyte” stars Korean actor Lee Jung-jae, Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

"Star Wars: The Acolyte" (Lucasfilm)

According to Disney+, episode 1 of “The Acolyte” garnered 4.8 million views for a day of streaming. 

“The Acolyte is the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year, with the first episode driving 4.8 million views based on 1 day of streaming,” Disney+ announced. 

Disney+ released the first two of the eight episodes on June 5 with new episodes released every week. 

The series focuses on an investigation into a shocking crime spree that pits Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jungjae) against a dangerous warrior (Amandla Stenberg) from his past. As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

In interviews with Manila BulletinLee Jung-jae and Jacinto talked about their excitement after getting their roles in “The Acolyte.” 

Executive producer Leslye Headland created the series based on Star Wars by George Lucas. 

She directed the premiere episodes (episodes 1 and 2) while director Kogonada helmed episodes 3 and 7, Alex Garcia Lopez directed episodes 4 and 5, and Hanelle Culpepper helmed episodes 6 and 8.
