PAGASA records ‘extreme danger’ heat index in E. Samar on June 9


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported an "extreme danger" heat index level in Guiuan, Eastern Samar on Sunday, June 9.

The heat index in the said area was 52 degrees Celsius (°C) on Sunday, slightly lower than the highest heat index recorded this year, which was 55°C on May 26 and 28, also logged in the same town

PAGASA said a heat index above 52°C indicates “extreme danger” as “heat stroke is imminent.”

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau recorded a heat index of 46°C in Virac (Synop), Catanduanes, and Aparri, Cagayan. Followed by 45°C in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte and Masbate City, Masbate.

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Baler (Radar), Aurora; Casiguran, Aurora; Catarman, Northern Samar; and Daet, Camarines Norte had a 44°C heat index.

A 43°C heat index was felt in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Pasay City, Metro Manila; Iba, Zambales; Sangley Point, Cavite; Infanta, Quezon; Romblon, Romblon; Cuyo, Palawan; Roxas City, Capiz; Dumangas, Iloilo; Tacloban City, Leyte; Maasin, Southern Leyte; Dipolog, Zamboanga Del Norte; and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Del Sur.

PAGASA added that 42°C was felt in Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Itbayat, Batanes; CLSU Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; Alabat, Quezon; Coron, Palawan; Legazpi City, Albay; Mambusao, Capiz; Mactan International Airport, Cebu; Borongan, Eastern Samar; and Butuan City, Agusan Del Norte.

On June 9, 31 areas have heat indices in the “danger” category.
