Newly released man shot dead in Ilocos Sur

CAMP PRESIDENT QUIRINO, Bantay, Ilocos Sur â€“ A 48- year-old man who had just been released from jail was shot dead on the national highway in Barangay Cuancabal, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur on Saturday morning, June 8.

Police Major Juan Jhayr Maggay, Cabugao chief of police, identified the victim as Antonio C. Sarmiento of Barangay Guimod, San Juan, Ilocos Sur.

The victim was alighting from his motorcycle when gunmen appeared and shot him.

The suspects onboard a motorcycle fled to an undisclosed location.

Sarmiento was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Police said gunmen used a caliber .45 pistol based on the recovered empty shells from the crime scene.

Follow-up investigation said that the victim was recently released from jail due to illegal logging.
