Marvel Universe Live! Thrilling, smart, and funny

Billed as an Arena experience, Marvel Universe Live is presented, you guessed it, not projected on a screen, but live in front of the audience.

In an all-original story, we join the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy as they race to stop Loki from – as per usual – ruling the universe or destroying it. Everyone’s favorites are present and accounted for, from Captain America to Spider-Man, Rocket Racoon and even gold old Groot.

The story plays out over an hour and a half of stunts, fights, high-flying wirework, and acrobatics that bring the excitement of a Marvel adventure closer to the audience in a more grounded, practical way.

There are motorcycle stunts, fire-spinners, people dropping from the ceiling, and pyrotechnics that get the adrenaline running. You get a visceral reaction when things are going on in front of you that you don’t get from seeing something on a screen.

Think Cirque Du Soleil in the Marvel Universe and you have a pretty good idea of what Marvel Universe Live is like.

In an increasingly digital world where people, particularly young children, are seeing the world through their screens full of filters and news feeds, live performances are now even more of a novelty, but one that is still going strong.

There is something deliciously old school about seeing stunts performed live in a venue, where you can see things going on in front of you, and the effects are all practical. The story itself (which I will not spoil here) has a very ’80s or 90’s crossover event feel to it, and while watching, I could see how the events would fit nicely into comic book issues like the yearly company-wide events Marvel comics would have.

Metrobank, in keeping with its push to bring the best experiences to its clients and card holders, partnered with the show’s producers, Feld Entertainment, to bring the event to Philippine shores. Metrobank Mastercard holders even got an opportunity to get first dibs on the show’s tickets.

The show is geared primarily for kids, true but the script is funny and smart enough for little tykes and those of us who are a bit more advanced in age but still nurture our inner 10-year-old Marvel fan within us.
