Hit the big ones, PBBM tells PNP in the campaign vs illegal drugs

President Marcos has ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to focus on syndicates and high-profile illegal drugs personalities in the conduct of the aggressive anti-illegal drugs operations. 

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said this is the guidance that they are now being carried out and will be continuously implemented especially on the days leading to the midterm elections.

‘The guidance of the President is for us to hit the big ones. So we are looking at the illegal drugs trail, especially on where these illegal drugs are being brought,” said Marbil.

Marcos earlier held a command conference with top officials of the PNP. 

The shift on the focus in the campaign against illegal drugs, according to Marbil, led to the improvement of statistics on illegal drugs campaign accomplishments in the past six months.

And this is the reason why he wants a change in the conduct of anti-illegal drugs operations evaluation—from every six months to quarterly assessment, said Marbil. 

“We have good statistics, every six months. But after that I just want it quarterly and we have the resources especially right now,” said Marbil.

The PNP chief issued the statement as the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) destroyed around P9.1 billion worth of confiscated illegal drugs that were confiscated in the past months at the Integrated Waste Management, Inc. (IWMI), Barangay Aguado, Trece Martires City, Cavite.

The destroyed stockpile of illegal drugs had a total weight of 2,435,619.8626 grams—majority of the illegal drugs destroyed were 1,293,934.2149 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu; 720,898.6564 grams of marijuana; and 359,752.1449 grams of Ephedrine.

What’s with the elections?

Marbil said they are aware of the open secret that some sectors are in dire need of big money on the days leading to and during the election period.

“That’s true. And that is what’s happening. So, we have to talk to the PDEA and discuss our strategy,” said Marbil.

Security officials have been noticing even before the spike in criminal activities before the scheduled elections, from bank robberies to kidnapping activities in the past.

Police earlier said that they are not discounting the possibility that some erring politicians are into illegal drugs business to finance their intention to run for public office.
