VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur – Ilocos Sur Gov. Jeremias Singson has ordered the preventive suspension for 60 days of the mayor of Santa Maria town in this province for gross negligence and dereliction of duty.

SANTA Maria, Ilocos Sur municipal hall.
Mayor Brigido C. Camarillo Jr.’s suspension stemmed from an administrative complaint against him by the majority members of the town council on January 26, 2024 for alleged failure to take action against an erring municipal treasurer, tolerated absentee employees, and declined to take action on issues concerning the town.
Camarillo was also accused of not conducting meetings as mandated by law aside from baseless absence from office.
Singson issued Preventive Suspension Order No. 2, Series of 2024, on May 31, 2024 upon the recommendation of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan through Provincial Resolution No. 0511, Series of 2024.
The order cited that there is strong evidence of guilt against Camarillo based on the preliminary evaluation and consideration of the parties’ allegations and evidence.
“Given the gravity of the offense, there is a great probability that his continuation in office could influence the witnesses or pose a threat to the safety, integrity of the records, and other evidence,” the order said.
The suspension takes effects immediately upon receipt by the respondent.
Vice Mayor Michael Florendo will take over as acting mayor and senior town councilor, Via Cabatu, will perform as acting vice mayor.
