House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Tuesday, June 4, expressed sympathy to the residents affected by the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.
“Syempre ipinagdadasal natin lahat ng mga residente diyan sa mga affected areas sa pagpuputok at pag-aalburoto ng Mt. Kanlaon,” Romualdez said in a chance interview.
(Of course, we pray for all the residents of the affected areas from the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.)
Romualdez said his office has been actively monitoring the situation on the ground since the eruption on Monday evening.
The House leader said he has spoken to the representatives in the affected area, namely Negros Oriental 1st district Rep. Jocelyn Sy-Limkaichong and Negros Occidental 4th district Rep. Juliet Marie Ferrer, with regards the release of financial aid and food packs.
“Nag download na kami ng (We have already downloaded) for immediate release—the AICS, TUPAD, MAIPS, and special food packs and reliefs to the area already since yesterday,” he said.
The AICS or Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation is a program by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) that provides assistance to poor Filipinos adversely affected by disasters and crises.
On the other hand, TUPAD, or Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers, is a program by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) that offers temporary employment for displaced workers.
Meanwhile, MAIPS refers to the Medical Assistance to Indigent Patients, a program that provides consultation, medicines, and other healthcare needs.
Earlier, Romualdez said he would expedite the release of P40 million worth of government aid to affected residents, alongside P4 million from his own Disaster Assistance Fund.
“So what is the priority, yung kailangang gawin talaga is i-relocate muna natin at ilikas muna natin ang mga residente sa affected areas kasi habang yan nag-aalburuto may mga ashfall at syempre mga harmful effects ng pagpuputok ng bulkan,” he added.
(What really needs to be done is to first relocate and evacuate the residents in the affected areas because while it erupts there will be ashfall and of course the harmful effects of the eruption of the volcano.)
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), nearly 800 individuals were forced to flee their homes following the explosive eruption at Kanlaon Volcano.
