Man, niece drown while trying to save 3 teenage girls in Ilocos Norte

A man and his niece drowned while trying to rescue three teenage girls in the sea of Barangay Naglicuan, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte on Thursday morning, June 27.

Police identified the fatalities as Willy Calpo, 47, of Barangay Carusipan, Pasuquin, and his niece, Irish dela Cruz, 19, of Barangay Taluyan, Malasiqui, Pangasinan.
Rescued were Lorraine dela Cruz, 14; and Grace dela Cruz, 18, residents of Barangay Taluyan, Malasiqui, Pangasinan, and Amaya Bulosan, 12, of Barangay Carusipan, Pasuquin.
Investigation said Grace and Amaya were swimming when they were taken away by big waves to a deep portion of the sea.
Willy, Irish, and Lorraine dived to rescue them but they too were also taken by big waves.
A resident, James Cornelio, swam but only rescued Lorraine, Grace, and Amaya.
Rescuers recovered Willy and Irish but they were declared dead by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Diopanthos Acop due to drowning and submersion.
Police reminded residents and visitors to take extra precautions while swimming on the sea due to sudden big waves.
