Chinese embassy hits US envoy in Manila for 'selective' application of law
China's embassy in Manila on Thursday, June 27, accused the US of having 'selective' application of law after its envoy to the Philippines spoke out against Chinese aggression of Filipino troops in the West Philippine Sea.
A statement from the Chinese embassy said the US, although "not a party to the South China Sea," is playing a "dishonorable part by stirring up confrontation and hyping up tension for its own geopolitical interest."
"When diplomatic efforts are being made by China and the Philippines to manage differences, the United States stokes the situation instead of promoting peace and facilitating talks," the statement read.
"History and facts show that the United States has never been a solution to but rather the problem itself," it added.
The embassy's statement was made in response to US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson's speech in Manila on Wednesday, June 26, when he urged China to stop harassing Philippine ships and troops in the West Philippine Sea.
Carlson cited the importance of the Indo-Pacific region, where the water still contested by China is located, as it "is the most dynamic and fastest-growing region on Earth as well as an essential driver of US and global security and prosperity."
The Chinese embassy also hit the US for never failing to use United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to denounce others, although "ironically, [it is] a state that has neither signed nor ratified UNCLOS."
The US embassy in Manila has yet to respond to such a criticism.
"While calling on upholding 'rule-based international order,' the US refuses to execute the judgement and advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice and resolution of the UN General Assembly," the Chinese embassy said.
"Its application of international law and international order is selective," it added.
While China continues to harass Filipino people at sea, the Chinese embassy, meanwhile, hit the US as it said the latter's true intention is not promoting peace and stability but a "freedom of rampage" of its own aircraft.
