Korean actors Gang Dong-won and Teo Yoo have been invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which organizes the Academy Awards or Oscars, to join its organization.
The Academy announced that it has invited 487 artists and executives to be members for 2024.
“We are thrilled to welcome this year’s class of new members to the Academy,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community.”

Gang Dong-won has starred in films such as “Broker” and “Peninsula” while Teo Yoo starred in “Past Lives.”
Korean-American actress Greta Lee, who co-starred with Teo Yoo in “Past Lives,” was also invited in the actors' category.
Korean-Canadian director Celine Song, who directed “Past Lives,” was invited in the directors and writers’ categories.
“Past Lives” was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 96th Academy Awards.
Jo Yeong-wook, music director of the film “Decision to Leave,” received a membership invitation in the music category.
Korean filmmakers and celebrities who are members of the Academy are Song Kang-ho, Choi Min-sik, Bong Joon-ho, and director Im Kwon-taek, Park Chan-wook, Lee Chang-dong, Hong Sang-soo, and Lim Soon-rye, and actors Lee Byung-hun, Bae Doo-na, Ha Jung-woo, Kim Min-hee, Cho Jin-woong, Youn Yuh-jung, Park Hae-il, Choi Woo-sik, Jang Hye-jin, Cho Yeo-jeong, Lee Jeong-eun, and Park So-dam.
AMPAS said membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity remaining a priority.
Of the 2024 invitees, “44 percent identify as women, 41 percent belong to underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 56 percent are from 56 countries and territories outside the United States. There are 71 Oscar nominees, including 19 winners, among the invitees.”
Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2024.
