Enhanced water supply for 10,000 households in Bacolod forthcoming

BACOLOD CITY – About 10,000 households in the southern part of this city will get enhanced water supply within the year.

This developed after PrimeWater, together with its joint venture partner, Bacolod City Water District (Baciwa), signed a bulk water supply agreement with Bacolod Bulk Water Inc. (BBWI) in the presence of Mayor Albee Benitez at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) on Tuesday, June 25.

“I have intervened and made sure that the local issues would be resolved because of the necessity in our water supply. We will wait for the production and delivery of the water supply,” Benitez said.

This agreement covers Injection Point 2 based in Murcia, Negros Occidental, which aims to address the current demand of this city by providing additional supply of 10 million liters per day (MLD) on the first year, progressively increasing up to 25 MLD on the fifth year.

Areas that would benefit from this agreement are Barangays Mansilingan, Handumanan, Felisa, Alijis, Tangub, Taculing, Pahanocoy, Sum-ag, and Singcang-Airport.

Benitez said that the signing will increase water supply here. He said that this city’s current water production is at its highest, with about 84 MLD, from the previous 77 to 80 MLD.

He said this city’s targeted water supply to be able to provide 24/7 water service is 120 MLD. “That’s what we’re focusing on right now,” he added.

Despite this development, Benitez maintained that this city is still experiencing water shortage, as it has not yet reached its targeted water supply. However, he is hopeful that with the initiatives of the local government, the situation will improve.

The effects of the El Niño phenomenon worsened the water crisis here, decreasing its water supply from 77 MLD to about 62 MLD, according to Benitez.

The mayor said that this city has already concluded its water rationing program, following improved water supply.

PrimeWater president Engineer Roberto Fabrique Jr., in a statement, said that PrimeWater and Baciwa implement targeted solutions and initiatives that will ensure improved water access and quality across Bacolod City as part of their commitment in addressing water supply here.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to enhance water services and provide sustainable supply to our consumers,” he added.

“As part of our commitment to provide a more sustainable water supply to our consumers, we are progressively shifting from groundwater to surface water to efficiently improve the water supply and quality in the city,” Engineer Gladys Kempis, PrimeWater operations head for Visayas and Mindanao, said in a statement.
