Last year, fashion was painted pink as people waited for the coming of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie. Every girl—even boys—channeled the doll’s iconic style. Think of charming pastels, glitters and sequins, and a playful twist on Western style. Brands and fashion designers jumped on the bandwagon and produced pieces in homage to Mattel’s most beloved creation. This movement also graced the digital world, producing a new trend that was called Barbiecore, producing over 650,000 posts just on Instagram.
Months after the movie premiered, we still see many collaboration collections with Barbie in the fashion landscape, proving people continue to crave the doll’s effervescent style. If you’re among those who still want to add Barbie’s spirit to your everyday look, you may want to check out this latest sneaker collection.
In celebration of Barbie’s 65th anniversary, American shoe brand Keds launches its line of women’s sneakers imbued with the character’s most iconic looks. The Barbie x Keds capsule collection features three wearable styles, ranging from Keds’ newest silhouette (The Keds Point) to an on-trend iteration of a classic platform sneaker.
“I cannot think of a better match,” Tiffany Ong, Keds’ head of marketing, says. “Both Barbie and Keds share a long and storied heritage… they both share a women-centric ethos and, most importantly, a love for fun and fashion.”
First is the Keds Point Striped Canvas. The platform sneakers, which come in the brand’s latest silhouette, are adorned with a black-and-white chevron-striped print, reminiscent of Barbie’s debut swimsuit from 1959. Pink with a subtle sheen are the Triple Up Metallic Leather Lace Up sneakers. The brand’s signature leather sneakers, inspired by Barbiecore, get a fun twist with its hot pink tone and cotton candy-hued laces. Rounding up the collection are the Point Metallic Leather Lace Up sneakers, the perfect kicks to dance the night away with its iridescent gold leather upper. Each pair comes with a removable golden Barbie “B” lace keeper for an added Barbie touch.
“Barbie was the first fashion doll, and even the first career doll, for young girls out there. She inspired countless girls to dream beyond just traditional roles,” Tiffany muses. “Much like Keds, Barbie has been a symbol of female empowerment, encouraging women to embrace self-expression and pursue their dreams. This is more than a collection. This is a celebration of creativity, fashion, and empowerment.”
The Barbie x Keds capsule collection is available at www.keds.com.ph and Keds’ retail stores in SM Megamall, Trinoma, SM North EDSA–The Block, Glorietta, Festival Mall, SM Fairview, Robinsons Magnolia, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, U.P. Town Center, Evia, Gateway 2 Mall, and Greenhills Mall.
