BJMP enhances education of PDLs

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has signed an agreement with stakeholders from the education sector that will pursue further improvements in the rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

In an agreement with the College Education Behind Bars (CEBB) in collaboration with the Health Beyond Bars (HBB) program of the Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU), an educational development in BS Midwifery to the qualified PDLs via the CEBB will be provided to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for their successful reintegration into society.

The signing of the agreement also served as a consultative meeting for the bureau and the CEBB facilitators on the implementation of CEBB to other jail facilities of the BJMP Central Luzon to ensure the smooth integration of the program into the existing rehabilitation framework.

The agreement was inspired by the successful pilot test of the program at the Marilao Municipal Jail and as such, the BJMP is now embarking on the roll out of the program at the Bataan District Jail Male and Female Dormitories and Guagua District Jail in Pampanga.

BJMP Jail Senior Inspector Kelvin Roy Domingo, chief of Legal Service Section, discussed topics pertaining to the overview of the “National Plan on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and the salient features of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020."

A total of 600 students graced the activity held at the Tarlac State University-main campus.

BJMP jail Inspector Don Mari Phil Frayna, acting chief of the Community Relations Service Section, also elaborated on Executive Order No. 70 series of 2019, providing an overview of the bureau’s relevance to recruitment and sharing insightful experiences to inspire the attendees.

“This community engagement aims to empower students to prevent radicalization in educational institutions," the BJMP explained.

BIDA program

Meanwhile, the BJMP also conducted a series of random greyhound operations at its jail facilities in Bulacan as part of the commitment to the “Buhay’ Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan” (BIDA) program of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The PDEA Bulacan Provincial Office and the 29 regional office personnel led by Jail Supt. Emily Bueno chief, Operations Division, recently searched every cell at the Marilao Municipal Jail, Sta. Maria Municipal Jail, Meycauayan City Jail, and San Jose del Monte City Jail-Male and Female Dormitories for illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, or nuisance contrabands.

“The greyhound operations resulted in no presence of such prohibited items,’’ the BJMP reported.

In addition, the BJMP noted that the jail nurses and PDEA personnel also conducted random drug testing to the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) of Meycauayan City Jail and San Jose del Monte City Jail-Male and Female Dormitories which alsoyielded negative results.
