'Victory for all': VP Duterte touts PH's inclusivity this Pride Month

The Philippines taking a step forward for inclusivity and equality is a “victory for all” as Vice President Sara Duterte underscored how Pride Month celebrates the Filipinos’ shared humanity and aspirations.

In her message for Pride Month on Sunday, June 23, the official took pride on how the country has promoted and championed disadvantaged sectors, including the LGBT community.
 

“Over the past many years, we have witnessed how we have become a nation that promotes inclusivity, advances the welfare of disadvantaged sectors, and champions the cause for equality,” Duterte said.
 

“This is a victory for all — not only for those who dreamed of a world without othering — a world where everyone is valued, accepted, and empowered, but also for all of us who toppled down the wall that isolated the LGBT sector and deprived them of recognition, respect, acceptance, and love,” she added.
 

The Vice President urged Filipinos to “take pride” in this progress and how they have stood up for LGBT causes, “especially those that promote our shared values and aspirations as a democracy.”
 

In describing Pride Month as “a reminder of the power of love over hate, discrimination, and indifference,” Duterte asked for it to “become a celebration of our humanity.”
 

“Magtulungan tayo upang tiyakin na ang bawat Pilipino, lalo na ang ating mga kabataan, ay ligtas, tunay na naririnig, at buong pusong kinikilala (Let us work together to ensure that each Filipino, especially our youth, is safe, heard, and wholeheartedly recognized),” she added.
 

Pride Month is celebrated every June to commemorate the struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit for justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ sector.
 

On Saturday, June 21, the Philippines celebrated the Pride Month through a festival in Quezon City, which was attended by some 200,000 people.
 

Through the festivities, the LGBTQ+ community and its allies advocated for the SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression) Equality bill pending in Congress.
