RSA joins economic team in courting Japanese investors
Tycoon Ramon S. Ang of San Miguel Corp. (SMC) is joining President Marcos’ economic managers in Tokyo to showcase investment opportunities in the Philippines.
Having recently delegated day-to-day management of the country’s most diversified conglomerate to his eldest son, Ang will take part in today's Philippine Economic Briefing (PEB) in Japan’s capital.
He is in Tokyo to support the government’s economic team, led by Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto, a source told Manila Bulletin.
Ang’s involvement in the PEB Tokyo event may not have come as a surprise, especially after his appearance at the recent economic briefing in Manila where he tackled inflation and the situation in the West Philippine Sea.
San Miguel’s brewery business is also partially owned by Kirin Holdings, a company based in Japan.
Ang, however, is just one of the private-sector representatives taking part in the PEB. Other key businessmen present in Tokyo include Michael Tan, son of billionaire Lucio Tan and president of Asia Brewery Inc., as well as Injap Sia II, chairman of Double Dragon.
Also in attendance are Cezar P. Consing of Ayala Corp., Andrew Gotianun III of Filinvest Development Corp. and Sean Andre Sy of Steel Asia Manufacturing Corp.
Representatives from Aboitiz Group, SM Investments Corp., Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co., Federal Land Group, and LT Group, Inc. are also participating in the event.
A day before the PEB, Recto, along Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Secretary Frederick Go, and National Economic and Development Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan met with top executives of Marubeni Corp., one of Japan’s largest trading companies.
Recto was also accompanied by Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual, as well as Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista.
The Philippine delegation engaged with Marubeni executives to explore more investment partnerships in the country’s industrial market, renewable energy sector, and food production.
Also present were Energy Undersecretary Felix Fuentebella, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Deputy Governor Francisco G. Dakila, Jr., Bases Conversion Development Authority President and Chief Executive Officer Joshua M. Bingcang, and Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene Garcia-Albano.
