DOTr: 19-km bike lanes soon available in Intramuros

Around 19-kilometer protected bike lanes will soon be available to cyclists in Intramuros, Manila as part of the goal of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) under the Active Transport project.

The Intramuros bike lanes are part of the 2,400 kilometers of bike lanes to be established by the DOTr by year 2028.

So far, only 9.6 kilometer bike lanes are available following the launching of the project.

DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport Non-Infrastructure Jose Lim IV said the expanded bike lanes will benefit various stakeholders—tourists, students, persons with disabilities, residents, among others.

“These bike lanes stand to benefit 1.9 million cyclists, tourists, students and other stakeholders,” Lim said.

“The Active Transport project here in Intramuros has become unique because tourists were being offered guided tours around the historical landmarks while riding bicycles. We call it cycling tours,” he added.

In partnership with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), and Intramuros Administration, the active transport infrastructure also includes pedestrian walkways, with PWD-accessibility ramps, open spaces and construction of four public transport stops.
