Contrary to the views of his House colleagues, Davao del Norte 1st district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez believes that Vice President Sara Duterte did a good job as Department of Education (DepEd) secretary.
“I extend my full support and unwavering respect for VP Sara Duterte. She demonstrated extraordinary will and dedication as a member of Cabinet of the administration despite unfortunate persistent orchestrated moves to discredit and delegitimize her from the very beginning of her term,” Alvarez said in a statement Friday, June 21.
The former House Speaker reckoned that that Vice President's tenure as DepEd secretary was "one marked with significant initiatives aimed at addressing long-standing challenges faced by the education sector".
“The Vice President started important initiatives to create lasting positive impact for our teachers and learners, and the whole basic education system," Alvarez said.
"It is unfortunate that she will not be Secretary to see these initiatives through, but true to her brand of responsible leadership, she made it a point to provide a 30-day transition period to secure continuity of operations,” the Mindanao congressman noted.
On Wednesday, June 19, Vice President Duterte personally tendered her resignation as DepEd chief in Malacañang. She served at the helm of the agency for two years.
She is the daughter of administration critic and former president, Rodrigo Duterte.
Alvarez and the elder Duterte are long-time friends.
