Money for leukemia treatment turns to ash in Bulacan fire

A two-storey house in Barangay Loma de Gato, Marilao, Bulacan was gutted by fire along with the money intended for the treatment of a leukemia patient on Wednesday, June 19.

The house owner, Lazaro Francisco, said the upper floor of their antique house suddenly caught fire at around 4:00 p.m. while he and his family were in the nearby house.

Francisco said he tried to retrieve from the burning house the money worth more than P300,000 that will be used for the treatment of his daughter who has leukemia, but someone stopped him because the roof was about to collapse.

"Sobrang napakalakas talaga ng ulan nang mangyari ang sunog, kaya hindi nadamay ang halos magkakadikitdikit na mga kabahayan dito sa Beverly Homes (There was heavy rain when the fire occurred so the houses closed to each other here in Beverly Homes were not affected)," Francisco told Manila Bulletin in an interview.

Firefighters from Marilao and nearby towns arrived to extinguish the blaze.

Probers from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)  have yet to determine the cause of the fire and cost of damage to property.
