Marikina LGU distributes tax exemption certificates to small business owners
The local government of Marikina City distributed business tax exemption certificates to some qualified sari-sari store and carinderia owners in the city on Thursday, June 20.

Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro, together with Congresswoman Maan Teodoro, led the distribution in accordance with Ordinance 140, Series 2023, which provides for full business permits and business tax exemptions for sari-sari stores and carinderias in Marikina City for the year 2024.
The exemption is granted by the city government to qualified small business owners, allowing them to recover their business capital and providing relief to small investors in Marikina.
Those who received the certificates are the owners of sari-sari stores and carinderias that have a start-up capital (initial investment) of no more than P10,000 or annual sales of no more than P180,000.
The exemption applies to businesses that do not sell cigarettes or alcohol.
For other business owners who want to know if they qualify for the exemption, they can inquire at the Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO) of the city.
Teodoro signed Ordinance 140 on January 15, with the goal of providing tax relief to small business owners to help them recover from the effects of the pandemic.
"Ginagawa natin ito hindi para makita lang, hindi para ipagyabang. Ginagawa natin ito para makatulong… kaya naisipan natin na ito na imbis na i-discount, ililibre na lang natin ang business tax (We are not doing this to brag about, but we are doing this to help them... so we thought that instead of giving discounts, we will just exempt them from business tax),” he said.
The city government first implemented the business tax exemption for sari-sari stores and carinderias in 2017 through the directive of Teodoro.
