The fatality was identified as Joseph Alvaro-Salburo.
According to Police Major Jaypee Dagami, chief of Police Station 3 in Lapu-Lapu, the crane operator, Oliver Empenado Navarro, 39, reportedly miscalculated the weight of a pre-cast concrete slab it lifted.
The crane lost its balance and nearly overturned. The concrete slab that it tried to lift fell on the victim, who was installing iron grill reinforcement at the time.
The Bureau of Fire Protection-Lapu-Lapu City Fire District and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) rushed to the area but the victim was already dead when they arrived.
The crane operator was taken into police custody after the incident. Investigation revealed that Navarro has no license to operate a crane.
