Liberal Party (LP) President Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman said former vice president Leni Robredo will run for mayor in Naga City during the midterm polls next year.

“Ang last namin na pag-uusap siya ay tatakbo mayor ng Naga City upang ipagpatuloy ang programa ng kanyang late husband,” Lagman told reporters on Thursday, June 20.

(As per our last conversation, she will run for mayor in Naga City to continue the programs of her late husband.)

Robredo, leader of the so-called "Kakampinks", is the widow of the late former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Jesse Robredo. The latter was former multi-time Naga mayor, and a beloved figure in Bicolandia.

Next DepEd secretary?

Lagman shared the information about his party-mate Robredo after he was asked to react to an online post, which floated that the latter should be appointed as the new Department of Education (DepEd) secretary.

This, after incumbent Vice President Sara Duterte resigned as DepEd secretary on Wednesday afternoon, June 19.

Asked if this would mean that Robredo would not accept the same position if offered to her, Lagman answered: “Yan ang call ni Leni. Wala kaming kontrol dyan.”

(That's Leni's call. We have no control over that.)

Robredo, former LP chairperson, ended up a far second to Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. during the May 2022 presidential race.
