As heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines, a health expert on Wednesday, June 19, shared some tips on preventing this condition.

During PTV's Bagong Pilipinas public briefing, Philippine Heart Association president Dr. Rodney Jimenez cited the importance of proper diet and exercise in preventing heart diseases.
"About exercise, we shouldn't live a sedentary lifestyle, we should always exercise," Jimenez said in a mix of English and Filipino.
"We should exercise five times a week, 150 minutes a day," he added.
He suggested an alternative goal of aiming for 10,000 steps a day.
"However, I've found a study that shows that we can reduce that to 6,000 steps," he said.
"But for better results, especially for weight loss, achieving 10,000 steps is better," he added.
Aside from exercise, Jimenez underscored the importance of regular checkups, monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol level and blood sugar for diabetic individuals.
He also warned the public to avoid "trans fats," which are commonly found in fast food restaurants.
