AFP: PH Navy personnel sustains severe injury during latest resupply mission at Ayungin Shoal

A member of the Philippine Navy was severely injured when China Coast Guard (CCG) intentionally rammed the supply boats of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) that were engaged in a resupply mission at Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal on Monday, June 17.
Col. Xerxes Trinidad, chief of AFP public affairs office, confirmed the information to the media late Tuesday afternoon, June 18.
“The injured personnel has been safely evacuated and received prompt medical treatment,” Trinidad noted, although he did not go into details as to what type of injury was sustained by the said personnel.
“The CCG's continued aggressive behavior and unprofessional conduct towards a legitimate humanitarian mission is unacceptable. They must restrain themselves to avoid escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea,” he added.
This marked the first time that the AFP gave details on the botched resupply mission.
Trinidad on Monday refused to discuss operational details of the incident.
The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) remained mum on the details of the operation, contrary to what they have been doing when incidents occur during past resupply missions.
Nonetheless, Trinidad assured the public that the AFP “remains committed to maintaining our presence in the WPS, adhering to international law to protect our seas, our rights, and our future.”
