Slim chance of a tropical cyclone this week --- PAGASA

'Habagat' to affect western sections of Southern Luzon, Visayas

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, June 17, that it is not expecting any tropical cyclones this week but noted that the southwest monsoon or "habagat" will continue to affect parts of the country.

In its latest public weather forecast, Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said that PAGASA is still not monitoring any low pressure area (LPA) or storm within and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

"Possible, at least for this week, maliit yung tsansa na magkaroon tayo ng bagyo (Possibly, at least for this week, there is a small chance of having a storm)," Badrina said.

Effects of 'habagat'

Citing observations from PAGASA's latest satellite images, Badrina noted the continued presence of the southwest monsoon, particularly in the western parts of the Visayas and Southern Luzon.

"Inaasahan natin dulot ng southwest monsoon, malaki yung tsansa ng mga pag-ulan at maulap na partikular na sa bahagi nitong Palawan at gayun din sa Western Visayas, itong area ng Panay Island at gayun din sa bahagi ng Guimaras (Due to the southwest monsoon, we expect a high chance of rain and cloudy weather, especially in parts of Palawan and Western Visayas, including Panay Island and Guimaras)," he said.

Meanwhile, Badrina noted that the remaining parts of the country will still experience warm afternoons with a high chance of isolated rain showers, thunderstorms, and lightning in the afternoon and evening.

In its weather forecast for June 17, PAGASA said Palawan and Western Visayas will continue to experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms brought by the southwest monsoon.

Likewise, Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and the rest of MIMAROPA, will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms still due to the "habagat."

The rest of the country, on the other hand, will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate, to at times, heavy rains or severe thunderstorms in the affected areas.
