Iloilo bags P1M for winning in Independence Day parade of floats

The province of Iloilo received P1 million for being declared as the grand champion during the "Parada ng Kalayaan 2024" (Parade of Floats) on Independence Day on Wednesday, June 12, according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Iloilo’s float, “The Cry of Santa Barbara,” bested nine other local government units (LGUs) that participated in the competition.

DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. and National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chairperson Lisa Nakpil turned over to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. a trophy and the cash reward during simple rites at the DILG Extension Office on Thursday, June 13.

Abalos lauded the float of Iloilo for “capturing the essence of being a Filipino” in the fight for independence and for showcasing the spirit of "bayanihan."

President Marcos Jr. capped off the nationwide commemoration of the 126th Independence Day with the Parada ng Kalayaan 2024 after a three-day series of grand festivities promoting the new "Bagong Pilipinas" concept.

The DILG noted that the parade was highlighted by 22 beautifully-decorated floats from various provinces and national government agencies that showcased the rich history of the Philippines, particularly the story of 11 events depicting the country’s nationwide struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

The parade also displayed the procession of 10 original branches and cabinet departments of the first Philippine Republic, the DILG added.
