Hoffman boosts Paris bid, takes bronze in Canadian meet

Lauren Hoffman boosted her 2024 Paris Olympics bid after winning the bronze medal in the women's 400-meter hurdles at the 2024 Edmonton Athletics Invitational in Canada, Friday, June 14 (Manila time).

The 25-year-old hurdler timed 56.10 seconds to finish behind eventual gold medalist Shana Grebo (55.59sec) of France and silver winner Milan Young (56.03sec) of the United States.

Hoffman's teammate Robyn Brown, meanwhile, fell short of a podium finish after clocking 56.93sec for fifth.

Hoffman currently tightens her grip of the 34th place in the Olympic world quota rankings with 1218 points while Brown (1188) is in a critical position at 41st. Their event has only allocated Olympic berths to the Top 40 athletes.

Hoffman and John Cabang Tolentino, who is currently at 28th place in men's 110m, are expected to be included in the PH team that would compete for its 100th year since its first appearance in the 1924 edition in the same French capital.

Meanwhile, 2016 Rio Olympian Eric Cray failed to land a medal after finishing fifth in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 50.11sec.

American bet James Smith (48.97sec) ruled the event while Canada’s Malik Metvier (49.07sec) and Bahrain’s Shakeem Hall-Smith (49.63sec) settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

Cray, a six-time Southest Asian Games champion, currently ranks 49th place in his bid for a return trip to the Olympics.

On the other hand, Tokyo Olympian Kristina Knott is nearing her comeback in the quadrennial meet as she currently produces 1174 points in the women's 200m list at the 39th spot — the Top 48 athletes will qualify in her event.

But Cray, Brown and Janry Ubas, will have until June 30 to set their foot in respective qualifying niches or hit the Olympic qualifying standards.

So far, the Nationals have only one athletics representative in pole vaulter EJ Obiena.
