Alas Pilipinas and Japan men’s volleyball team’s friendly match has been cancelled for the second time “due to unforeseen circumstances,” the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) announced on Friday, June 14.

Initially, the Filipinos were scheduled to play the fan-favorite Ryujin Nippon side two years ago before it was also called off due to health protocols during the height of the pandemic.
While Alas is coming off another 10th place finish in the AVC Challenge Cup for Men earlier this month, the Japanese volleyball powerhouse is heading to the Philippines for the Week 3 of the 2024 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) after ending the second week of the tournament fifth place in the standings in eight outings.
“The Philippines-Japan friendly match originally announced has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances that have impacted its preparation and scheduling,” read the statement, which was posted on social media.
“Our commitment to delivering an exciting volleyball experience remains unwavering. Please stay tuned to our official channels for updates on future events,” it added.
The Philippines is set to host the men’s action of VNL for the third consecutive year from June 18 to 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
With Ryujin Nippon trio Yuki Ishikawa, Ran Takahashi and Yuji Nishida playing for the FIVB third-ranked squad, the Filipinos are looking forward to their return on Tuesday, June 18, against Canada at 8:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the newly-revamped Nationals may still get their chance to face the volleyball powerhouse either during the group phase of the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship or in another rescheduled friendly match.
