The 20-year-old Quizon has 7.5 points to show after settling for a draw in 33 moves of Sicilian Defense against Nogerbek.
He is tied with Serbia’s Luka Budisavljevic, Kazakhstan’s Nogerbek and GM Emin Ohanyan and just half a point behind solo leader GM Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia.
Quizon currently has five wins and five draws under his belt, recording victories against Zambia’s Rafael Sharon, Malaysia’s Anderson Jie, India’s IM S Aswath and Hungary’s GM Gleb Dudin.
He had drawn with GM Aleksey Grebnev, and Indian bets IM Ramesh Avinash, AFM Harshit Pawar, and GM Aditya S Samant.
Gharibyan beat IM Rudik Makarian of Russia in 79 moves of Bogo-Indian defense to occupy the top spot.
Quizon eyes a victory over Ohanyan in his final battle which could boost his bid of becoming the first Filipino world junior champion or surpass Nelson Mariano’s third-place finish three decades ago.
Quizon, who holds 2448 FIDE ratings, is gunning for a Grandmaster (GM) title but needs to reach 2500 to earn the coveted status.
Quizon might as well get an outright GM title if rules the tourney.
