Davao City officials order DPWH to fast-track road repair projects

DAVAO CITY – The City Council of Davao approved a resolution on Tuesday, June 11, directing the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to accelerate their ongoing road repair projects and complete all pending infrastructure projects.

Committee on Public Works and Highways chairman Councilor Edgar Ibuyan Jr. expressed his concern in a privileged speech during a regular session about the numerous road repair projects of the DPWH which were carried out in a disorderly manner.

Ibuyan said that these projects were unnecessary because the roads were still in good condition and did not need fixing or they lacked proper planning. He criticized the DPWH for not obtaining the necessary permissions before starting their projects.

The councilor, reading several complaints from the people of Davao City, emphasized that some of the DPWH projects lead to incomplete highways and traffic congestion. He said people keep saying there are many road projects but none are complete.

Ibuyan further explained that this situation persists due to ongoing problems, exemplified by the incomplete road repairs at Guadalupe Village, Matina Pangi, Mamay Road, Cabantian-Indangan Road, and numerous other locations.

“We insist that DPWH act swiftly fix and restore all roads they have already damaged to good condition before trying to destroy new roads within Davao City,” Ibuyan said.

He said residents and visitors endure significant challenges, particularly during heavy rainfall when streets experience severe flooding caused by incomplete road repairs. Ibuyan added that the DPWH must address the issue.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte had earlier called the DPWH-Davao's attention on the deteriorated roads and highways in the city. He said the agency should prioritize road repairs of damaged roads and construction of new road networks.

The city has been raising the same concern since March this year. The city council and the mayor have urged the DPWH-Davao to improve communication and coordination with the local government regarding road project delays.

DPWH-Davao spokesperson Dean Ortiz earlier recognized the city’s apprehensions, affirming their collaboration with the local government and other concerned stakeholders to address the matter.
