After an unfinished three-year contract in Japan, another lucrative three-year deal awaits him in South Korea.

Earlier this year, the Gilas big man sought release from Ryukyu Golden Kings midway through his second stint with the team to “explore new horizons.”

In his rookie year in the pro, though in limited action, the 23-year-old helped the Kings to a Japan B. League championship title in the 2022-23 season.

All wrapped up in expectations for his second year with the team, Tamayo wound up with even lesser playing time with Ryukyu which prompted him to consider opportunities beyond the Japanese league.

Having the same goal in mind, Tamayo wants to do things a little differently this time.

“Siguro ‘yun ‘yung opportunity na dumating sa akin. I think from my management, my family also, I think it’s better for me to try [playing] in Korea and have more exposure,” Tamayo told reporters on Wednesday, June 12, inside the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City where he was present to support his former collegiate squad University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.

If there’s anything that stood out from his somewhat underutilized time in Japan, it’s that his patience has gotten a lot longer and better.

“Siyempre try to help the team win the championship or to win games. ‘Yun lang naman ang goal ko palagi kung saan ako sasaling team,” said Tamayo.

“Hindi naman [ako nag-eexpect agad]. Siyempre I have to gain [the opportunity]. Hindi naman siya automatic, so I have to work hard for it,” he added.

For now, Tamayo is yet to make an official trip to Korea for his club team as he looks to keep his focus on Gilas Pilipinas in its upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament in July.
