Workers' groups demand for salary increase on Independence Day
Workers' groups staged a protest to demand for a salary increase and attempted to march to Mendiola in Manila on the 126th anniversary of Philippine independence on Wednesday, June 12.

The rallyists brought a huge banner that said, “May kalayaan ba kung gutom ang masa? +750 dagdag sahod, isabatas na! (Is there freedom if people are hungry? The P750 salary increase should be enacted!),” as they chanted, “Sahod, itaas! (Increase our salary!).”
One banner read, “Sahod, trabaho at karapatan, hindi Cha-cha! (What we want are a salary increase, job opportunities, and our rights, not charter change!).”
At around 10 a.m., the rallyists were blocked by members of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) in Recto, Manila. As a result, their program was held there, where Leody De Guzman of Partido Lakas ng Masa spoke.
“Mataas pa rin ang presyo ng bigas, kaya't wala tayong kalayaan sa mataas na presyo ng bigas. Wala rin tayong kalayaan sa mataas na presyo ng kuryente. Wala rin tayong kalayaan sa panunupil at pagnanakaw ng mga kurap na opisyal ng gobyerno (The price of rice is still high, so we have no freedom from that. We also have no freedom from high electricity cost. We also don't have freedom from repression and theft by corrupt government officials),” he said.
“Ang gusto nating kalayaan ay kalayaan sa kahirapan. Ang gusto nating kalayaan ay kalayaan sa karapatang magpahayag at hindi yung hinaharang dito lang. Dapat doon tayo sa Mendiola dahil kunstitusyunal na karapatan natin ang magpahayag at magprotesta kung tayo ay may reklamo sa gobyerno (The freedom we want is freedom from poverty. The freedom we want is freedom to express ourselves and not to be blocked from doing so. We should be in Mendiola because it is our constitutional right to express and protest if we have a complaint against the government),” he added.
Rallyists also brought placards with the messages “Walang kalayaan ang aliping sahuran (There is no freedom for those who earn meager salaries),” “Sahod, hindi Cha-cha! Hustisyang pangklima, hindi gyera! (Salary increase, not charter change! Climate justice, not war!),” “Women's rights are human rights,” and "Walang kalayaan sa kagutuman (There is no freedom from hunger),” among others.
The protesters included the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP), BMP Southern Tagalog, Sanlakas, Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM), Koalisyon at Ugnayan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan sa Rehiyon 4A (KUMARE).
