Walang kalayaan kung walang Pinaglabanan: San Juan City commemorates 126th Independence Day

The San Juan City local government marked the country's 126th Independence Day on Wednesday, June 12, by urging Filipinos to keep in their hearts and minds the spirit of heroism towards a free and fruitful future.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora led the celebration at the Pinaglabanan Shrine together with Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, officials from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and the city government.

With the theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.,” the program started with a flag-raising ceremony followed by the wreath-laying at the Spirit of Pinaglabanan in honor of the Katipuneros who fought for our country.  

“August 30, 1896, itong lugar po na ito ng Pinaglabanan ay inatake nila Gat Andres Bonifacio. Sa labang yun, hindi po sila nagwagi, ngunit ito po ay nagsilbing hudyat ng mas malakihang pakikipaglaban na tuluyang nagbigay ng kalayaan sa Pilipinas (This area of Pinaglabanan was attacked by Gat. Andres Bonifacio on August 30, 1896. Even though the Katipuneros lost that battle, it became a signal of much larger battles which brought freedom to the Philippines)," Zamora said.

"Kaya tunay na ipinagmamalaki ng San Juan ang lugar na ito kung kaya’t minabuti ng Pamahalaang Lungsod, sa tulong ng konseho na ilipat dito ang monumento ng mga bayani. Nandito po sina Gat Andres Bonifacio, Dr. Jose Rizal, at Emilio Jacinto. Naniniwala po kami na dapat sila ay mailagay sa isang sagradong lugar upang mabigyan ng tamang pugay ng bawat Pilipino (Because San Juan City is very proud of this place, the city government, with the help of the San Juan City Council, opted to transfer the monuments of Gat Andres Bonifacio, Dr. Jose Rizal, and Emilio Jacinto here because we believe that they should be placed at a sacred area for Filipinos to be able to give them proper respect and recognition)," he added.

Gesmundo reminded the public of the significance of Pinaglabanan and the heroes who fought for it.

"Kasama ninyo, kami ay nagbibigay-pugay sa bawat Pilipinong nagsikap at nagsakripisyo at lumaban para sa kalayaang tinatamasa natin ngayon. Dito naganap ang unang malakihang pagsalakay ng mga Katipunero laban sa mananakop, isang sagupaan na magiging mitsa ng himagsikang Pilipino at kalaunan ng Kalayaan ng ating bayan. Kaya malaking karangalan para sa ‘kin na makasama kayo sa pagdiriwang sa dambanang ito. Alam ito ng mga San Juaneno, ‘Walang kalayaan kung walang Pinaglabanan' (We are giving due recognition to every Filipino who fought and sacrificed for the freedom we are enjoying now. Pinaglabanan is the venue of the first large-scale battle between the Katipuneros and the Spaniards. Hence, it is truly an honor for me to be able to join you in this celebration. All San Juaneños know that there will be no freedom without Pinaglabanan)," Gesmundo said.

“Sa araw na ito, ay sama-sama nating gunitain ang mga huwarang lumaban para sa ating bayan. Ating alalahanin ang ating mga sakripisyong nagdala sa atin ng ating tinatamasang kalayaan. At sama-sama tayong magtulungan sa pagtataguyod ng isang mas magandang kinabukasan para sa bawat Pilipino (Today, let's all remember and celebrate the heroes who fought for our nation. Let's all remember their sacrifices which led to the freedom that we have now. Let's work together and be united in creating a brighter future for each and every Filipino)," San Juan City Vice Mayor Angelo Agcaoili noted.
