Concerns discussed in first-ever Bacolod health summit

BACOLOD CITY – This city held its first health summit on Tuesday, June 11, to bridge gaps in the healthcare system to better serve the people here.

Mayor Albee Benitez enjoined stakeholders from the health sector to work with the city government in finding ways to address various concerns in the healthcare system.

“The target, the goal of the summit is to ensure that health shall be considered a human right, which means nobody will be denied access to medical service,” Benitez,  a keynote speaker in the summit held at the L’ Fisher Hotel here, said.

Benitez said that it is incumbent for all stakeholders to ensure that they meet the standards and obligations upon them, adding that the highest attainable medical service should be given to every human being. 

He encouraged everybody to give their ideas as he assured them that the city would take the forefront in ensuring that the strategies decided upon shall be enacted into operation. 

“This way we can understand and communicate with each other how best we can craft a direction or strategy moving forward, recognizing all of these gaps so that we would be able to serve every individual in the community,” the mayor said.

Benitez recalled that many have been seeking medical help, leading to the creation of the Bacolod City Comprehensive Health Program (BacCHP).

Under the BacCHP, indigents can avail of free medication and easy hospital access and are not required to make a downpayment when admitted to private hospitals here.

Benitez thanked the private hospitals for believing and partnering with the city’s healthcare program to serve the people of Bacolod.

He said that he and PhilHealth officials have discussed way to ensure an efficient health system.

“We understand that health is not cheap, it is not totally free, there is always a cost to it,” Benitez said as he stressed the need to strengthen PhilHealth.

Benitez said that pre-summit meetings have been organized to enable concerns to  be addressed and discussed and they could proceed looking for solutions, adapt, and make decisions during the health summit.

“This is the first step in realizing better health system for the city of Bacolod,” the mayor said as he noted  the very good attendance in the summit.
