Which barong to wear on PH Independence Day? EU envoy has 2 choices

Who better to ask than Filipinos when it comes to what Barong Tagalog to wear?

European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Veron once more sought the help of Filipinos in choosing which Barong Tagalog to wear for the 126th Independence Day festivities on Wednesday, June 12.

The ambassador made the same request via X (formerly Twitter) last year when he asked his followers to pick a traditional Filipino formal suit.

“Dear Filipinos, last year was such a hit thanks to everyone's input, so help me choose a Barong Tagalog again to celebrate Philippine Independence Day!,” he wrote.

“Check out the intricate details of each look under this thread and vote for your favorite Barong Tagalog in the poll,” Veron said.

Posting photos of the two barongs, the ambassador said the first option features “a very special handmade logo of the European Union.”

The photo showed an embroidered patch on the left breast of the barong.

“Very symbolic of the threads that bind the EU and the Philippines for the past 60 years!,” he said of his first option.

The second option, the envoy furthered, has “more intricate designs” as the barong “showcases geometric abstractions in its embroidery.”

“It also has a half-open front with French square cuffs,” Veron added.

The ambassador opened a poll and asked Filipinos to cast their vote until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, just a day ahead of the Independence Day festivities.

As of posting, with 135 votes and seven hours left to vote, the second barong with the more traditional design, has 71 percent of the votes, while the first barong has 29 percent.
