DOJ condemns killing of lady prosecutor in Digos City

DAVAO CITY – The Department of Justice (DOJ) condemned the killing of a 54-year-old female provincial prosecutor in Digos City in Davao del Sur on Monday afternoon, June 10.

The DOJ denounced the murder of lawyer Eleanor dela Peña, an assistant provincial prosecutor in Davao Occidental, who was shot dead while driving home in Digos City.

“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the tragic death of Prosecutor Eleanor dela Peña,” the DOJ National Prosecution Service-11 said.

The NPS-11 said the death of Dela Peña, fondly called by her colleagues and officemates as “Mommy Ning,” leaves a void in their legal system and in the hearts of all who knew and worked alongside her.

Initial investigation by the Digos City Police Station said the former president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Davao City Chapter was shot while onboard her pickup truck. She sustained multiple bullet wounds in the head and died on the spot.

Police conducted a hot-pursuit operation and arrested the gunman, the victim’s half-brother,
Arnel Galot dela Peña, 56, a resident of Purok 3, Talas, Sulop, Digos City.

The suspect was identified through the statement of the victim’s son, along with surveillance footage obtained near the crime scene and description of the witness.

Arnel was wearing a black helmet with the letter “M,” a blue hooded jacket and jeans, and riding a red Honda Click motorcycle.

Recovered from the suspect were 10 12-gauge shotgun shells, 27 5.56mm live rounds, an M16 rifle magazine, and a helmet and jacket allegedly used before the crime.

The Davao legal community said Eleanor consistently showed bravery and devotion in her dedication to enforcing the law as a public prosecutor.

The NPS-11 said Dela Peña exemplified unwavering courage and dedication in her commitment to upholding the law and serving the community.

“Their (prosecutors) sacrifice serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in the pursuit of justice, yet it also reinforces our collective commitment to upholding the rule of law. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mommy Ning’s family, friends, and colleagues,” the NPS-11 said.

The IBP-Davao Chapter also condemned the killing of Dela Peña, calling it a “heinous act of violence against a dedicated public servant.”

It urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively, stressing the importance of conducting a thorough and speedy investigation for justice to be served.

Police are eyeing land dispute as a potential reason behind the killing.
