The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is set to inaugurate a state-of-the-art facility monitoring center for earthquakes and tsunamis in San Fernando, Cebu on Friday, May 10.

The Phivolcs Visayas Cluster Monitoring Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (PVCMCET) will feature a near real-time display and monitoring of earthquakes and tsunamis using data from the Philippine Seismic Network (PSN).
"The PVCMCET is a strategic state-of-the-art facility to ensure service continuity of DOST (Department of Science and Technology)-Phivolcs national earthquake and tsunami monitoring operations in cases of major disruptions in key operations of the Phivolcs Data Receiving Center (DRC) in Quezon City," Phivolcs said.
Phivolcs currently operates 125 seismic stations equipped with upgraded computer systems for data acquisition and processing across the country.
Newly installed tools for decision support, mapping, and information dissemination also allow for near real-time streaming of seismic waveforms and real-time instrumental intensity reporting.
The PVCMCET will have nine staff-controlled seismic stations, 25 satellite-telemetered seismic stations, six sea level monitoring stations for tsunami detection, and seven community tsunami alerting stations.
"The new PVCMCET is a testament to our vision of disaster resilience and community resilience from earthquake and tsunami," Phivolcs said.
"It will also serve as the epicenter of collaboration among national and local government units, the academe, and non-government organizations in the region," it added.
Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. and Phivolcs Director Teresito C. Bacolcol are set to lead the inauguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony.
They will be joined by distinguished guests from Region VII offices and stations.
