‘A victory for justice’: Caritas Philippines backs SC decision against red-tagging

Caritas Philippines, an advocacy arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), on Thursday, May 9, said the Supreme Court's (SC) decision on red-tagging was a "victory for justice" and a big step towards a safer Philippines.

“Red-tagging has instilled fear and silenced dissent for far too long.,” said Caritas Philippines President Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo in a statement.

"The Supreme Court's ruling sends a clear message that such tactics will not be tolerated,” Bagaforo added.

Caritas Philippines Vice President Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, who has been red-tagged, shared his personal experience of the dangers of this practice.

"Red-tagging creates a climate of fear and intimidation," the bishopñsaid as he mentioned that it discouraged people from speaking out on issues affecting the marginalized in his diocese of San Carlos.

Alminaza, however, stressed his commitment to serving the underprivileged despite the threats.

"Being red-tagged can have serious consequences," he admitted, "but as a follower of Christ, I find inspiration in His teachings to love one another and fight for justice,” he said.

Furthermore, the group underscored the court's decision as a “vital step” toward protecting Filipinos who advocate for peace and justice.

Alminaza pointed out that many have been silenced based on “mere accusations.”

"This ruling offers a glimmer of hope and a chance for healing," he said.

The group likewise urged those red-tagged to seek help and assured them they are not alone.

Caritas also called on the government and the military to respect the ruling of the Supreme Court and guarantee the security of every Filipino, regardless of their political beliefs.

"We do call on all sectors of society to work together to foster a more tolerant and respectful environment where open discourse and dissent are encouraged," Bagaforo said.
