Pasay City, 24 other areas experienced ‘dangerous’ heat index on May 8

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded 25 areas reaching a “dangerous” level of heat index on Wednesday, May 8.

Dagupan City, Pangasinan recorded the day’s highest heat index at 48 degrees Celsius (°C).

Meanwhile, a heat index of 46°C was registered in Aparri, Cagayan and Roxas City, Capiz; and 45°C in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte and Virac, Catanduanes.

PAGASA said a heat index between 42 degrees Celsius (°C) and 51°C indicates “danger,” as "heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely," and "heat stroke is probable with continued activity."

Other areas that experienced a dangerous heat index on Wednesday were Mariano Marcos State University Station, Batac, Ilocos Norte (44°C); Cubi Pt., Subic Bay, Olongapo City (44°C); Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (44°C); Cuyo, Palawan (44°C); Catarman, Northern Samar (44°C); Bacnotan, La Union (43°C); Iba, Zambales (43°C); Clark Airport, Pampanga (43°C); Central Luzon State University Station, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija (43°C); Aborlan, Palawan (43°C); Dumangas, Iloilo (43°C); Guiuan, Eastern Samar (43°C); Ninoy Aquino International Airport Station, Pasay City (42°C); Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (42°C); Baler, Aurora (42°C); San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (42°C); Masbate City, Masbate (42°C); Mambusao, Capiz (42°C); Iloilo City, Iloilo (42°C); and Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (42°C).

The heat index measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature.

Iba, Zambales recorded the highest heat index so far this year at 53°C on April 28.

PAGASA said a heat index above 52°C indicates “extreme danger” as “heat stroke is imminent.”
