Hit-and-run driver in Cebu City nabbed after 2 months

CEBU CITY – The driver of the vehicle that figured in a fatal hit-and-run here was finally arrested more than two months after the tragic incident.

Operatives of the Abellana Police Station arrested Aaron Karl Tan past 2 p.m. on Monday, May 6.

Police identified Tan as the driver of the Mazda CX7 that hit Jeslar Uriel Larumbe on February 4.

The incident was captured by a security camera. In the video, Larumbe was driving a motorcycle when he was sideswiped by a private vehicle on Queens Road in Barangay Kamputhaw.

Police described the incident as a case of road rage.

Police Major Mark Don Alfred Leanza, chief of the Abellana Police Station, said they have gathered enough evidence to pin down Tan.

Leanza said they were also able to gather enough evidence to file murder charges instead of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

He said it took time for them to file a case against the suspect as they ensured that they have an airtight case.

Leanza said that with the arrest of the suspect, the case is considered solved.

Tan refused to talk when reporters asked him to comment on his arrest.

The victim’s family welcomed the arrest of Tan. The arrest was a “noteworthy milestone” in their quest for justice, the family said.

“We continue to grieve and patiently await justice for our beloved Jeslar Uriel. Today, we are comforted by the thought that, indeed, the wheels of justice are turning," they said.

"Even as it is too soon to claim victory, there is yet a long road ahead that we are about to trek. We are grateful for all the members of our community who have helped us pray that this moment would arrive and who shared of themselves, their resources, insights, and expertise to help us to get to this milestone,” the family added.
