GSIS assures continued validity of existing UMID, eCards

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has assured that the introduction of a new digital ID will not affect existing users of Unified Multi-Purpose Identification (UMID) cards and eCards.

In a statement on Friday, May 31, the pension fund for government workers clarified that the GSIS Digital ID, which operates without a physical card, is only for new enrollees.

Last April, the GSIS issued Memorandum Circular No. 054-2024, announcing the discontinuation of UMID card and eCard production.

The GSIS, however, assured that existing UMID and eCard users will continue to receive their benefits without any disruption.

New enrollees, meanwhile, will be provided with ATM cards from either Land Bank of the Philippines or Union Bank of the Philippines, according to GSIS.

Furthermore, the pension fund assured that these ATM cards would be delivered to GSIS members or pensioners within five workdays, enabling them to access benefits, loan proceeds, and pensions seamlessly.

Integrated into the GSIS Touch mobile app, the GSIS Digital ID provides registered members and pensioners with easy access to their digital identification.

GSIS said the digital ID aims to streamline service processes, enhance security protocols, combat fraudulent activities, and raise user experience within the GSIS Touch ecosystem.

As of December 2023, 97 percent of GSIS loan transactions were electronically processed through kiosks and the GSIS Touch mobile app, with only three percent conducted via traditional over-the-counters.

Presently, a growing number of organizations globally are embracing digital ID technologies, with 42 percent actively integrating these solutions into their systems.
