New PCSO chair eyes expanded assistance programs

The newly appointed chairman of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) on Thursday, May 30, underscored the need to expand the scope and reach of the agency's assistance to the poor by utilizing their branch offices' services.

“We will think of ways to provide help to all our poor fellow citizens in need, especially those who are ill, even if they are in remote areas and provinces,” Felix Reyes said in a mix of English and FIlipino during his first interview with PCSO since being appointed as chairman of the PCSO Board.

Reyes explained that to achieve this goal, it is important to enhance connectivity and communication between the PCSO central office and its branch offices.

This improvement would enable branch offices to quickly relay the requests for assistance they receive in their respective areas.

On May 28, Reyes, a retired Marikina Regional Trial Court (RTC) judge, was sworn in by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

The former president of the Philippine Judges Association also expressed his intention to increase the annual revenue of the PCSO.

“So that they could contribute more to the Bureau of Treasury and extend assistance to more poor people,” Reyes said.

Reyes pointed out that they could raise the current target revenue of P60 billion for this year to as much as P78 billion by next year, and even P100 billion within the next two years, if they introduce more betting platforms and leverage new technology.

“There is a good chance that we could attain those target revenue especially with the introduction of new games and with the use of modern technology. We should not rely on fixed terminals anymore, but also utilize technology in our betting platforms,” he explained.

PCSO General Manager Mel Robles, meanwhile, expressed that he is looking forward to working with Reyes.

He stressed that the PCSO chairperson’s extensive experience in the judiciary and outstanding record as a public servant would surely help propel the PCSO to greater heights.

"This is dawning of a new era at PCSO, and the entire agency is looking forward to be working with Chairman Reyes," Robles said.
