Free fencing class opens in Mandaluyong

And with the growing popularity of the sport– thanks to Paris-bound Sam Catantan and Fil-Ivorian Maxine Tiu-Esteban – the Mandaleño Fencing is offering an easy-access program for the youth fencers in the city and hope to cater other parts of Metro Manila in the near future.

Catantan, 22, was a product of free fencing lessons before establishing herself as one of the country’s finest fencers – first at University of the East. She is now an athletic scholar of Penn State University and is competing in the US NCAA.

The soft opening was graced by coach Ariel Montinola City councilor Benjie Abalos and Greenfield Development Corporation EVP Atty. Duane Santos, who firmly believes that health and wellness are vital.

The Mandaluyong fencing club was established in January last year in partnership with the city sports office before moving to its new location in Greenfield District.

The classes will officially start on June 8 and will be held every weekend.
