Long-time death penalty revival backer Surigao del Norte 2nd district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers can't help but renew his advocacy for capital punishment following the road rage killing in Makati City.
"Another senseless death, victim of road rage. Another Chinese lording it over simple Filipinos. The country has become a breeding ground of criminals, terrorists, spies, sleeper cells. We have become the laughing stock of the world," Barbers said in a statement Thursday, May 30.
The veteran lawmaker from Mindanao was referring to the case of road rage gunman Raymund Yu, who killed a private family driver during an episode of road rage in the Makati EDSA tunnel.
“How did this Chinese bully get to own guns to kill helpless innocent Filipino civilians?” asked Barbers.
"It is time we revive the death penalty and include more crimes to be punishable by death. If we are to save the future generations, we have to show them the right way of governance," he said.
"Leniency and indifference will erode confidence and faith in government. Already we have seen how these criminals run roughshod over our laws because they know that they can get away with it with their money and influence," added Barbers, who had been dismayed over the road rage killing.
The Nacionalista Party (NP) stalwart further commented as to how corruption has "eroded the moral fiber" of the country, and has supposedly caused criminals to have their way.

“Corruption from the lowest ranking employees who facilitate or 'fixes' transactions for a fee, to the high-ranking officials in government who allow and empower the criminals to live among us, has enabled these criminals to run their wares with impunity," he said.
"From abusing the use of the bus lanes to operating POGOs (Philippine offshore gaming operators) and brandishing fake birth certificates and Philippine passports, kidnapping and murdering people, we have allowed ourselves to be disrespected and treated like dirt. These scums of the earth are now looking down on us and we are worthless in their eyes. We did this to ourselves,” Barbers said.
He further said: "They have this strong belief that emboldens them to treat us this way. They believe that every Filipino has his price, no matter his status and position. We can be bribed.”
The death penalty was abolished in 2006 during the time of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. It was last carried out in the country via lethal injection.
