"These scams typically involve upfront fees, tasks, requests, for personal information, and promising earnings that are not delivered as expected," CICC said in a Facebook post.

The online part-time task scam entailed deceptive offers of part-time employment or online tasks, which ultimately proved to be fraudulent.

"The scammer gains trust by offering small returns, then requests more funds for various reasons like fees, leading to victims losing money without any returns," CICC said.

How does it work?

The CICC, meanwhile, explained the step-by-step procedure scammers use for part-time job scams.

The body stated that cyber culprits typically initiate the scam by offering a part-time job with an exceptionally high salary that seems too good to be true.

The scammers will then assign victims tasks and promise payment for each task completed and "asks (victim) to join a group chat in another messaging app to continue the tasks."

In October 2023, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported a drop in the unemployment rate to 4.2 percent, affecting 2.9 million individuals.

The data is significantly lower compared to 4.5 percent in 2022.
