Arellano downs EAC, stays in semis hunt

Arellano University survived a fierce challenge put up by Emilio Aguinaldo College and eked out a 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-20, on Friday, May 3, to stay in the magic four in NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.

The Lady Chiefs needed to overcome a stinging opening-set loss and some late resistance from the Lady Generals to carve out their fifth victory in eight outings that kept the former inside the top four and in strong Final Four contention.

“Hindi na po kami pwede matalo,” said AU spiker Pauline de Guzman, who paced her team with 17 points including 16 off attacks while coming through in defense with 10 digs.

AU is eyeing to make a return trip to the Final Four after missing the cut last year as well as in the finals after making it that far two seasons ago during the league’s return from its pandemic absence.

The Lady Chiefs are also bent on snaring back the crown after completing an amazing three-peat feat five years ago.

But for these things to happen, AU must hurdle the last hurdle in Jose Rizal U, which the former will face off Tuesday.

Laika Tudlasan helped in the cause by contributing 15 hits.

The Lady Generals succumbed to their eighth straight defeat in as many outings.
